Limitations of Conventional Gait Therapy
With conventional methods, providing highly intensive physiological gait rehabilitation to severely impaired patients is a huge challenge for health professionals today.
- Highly labor intensive; two to three physical therapists to provide the necessary support
- High physical load for therapists
- Limitations due to the physical capacity of the single therapist
- Resource availability
- Non-repetitive with many variables
Advantages of Lokomat Therapy
Effective Gait Training
Robot-assisted therapy enables effective and intensive training by providing a high number of task-specific repetitions, which is an essential factor underlying neuroplasticity and improved functional outcome.
Pooled data from a total of 70 clinical studies published in peer-reviewed journals, including 39 RCTs, show that Lokomat training improves clinical outcomes related to walking abilities and functional mobility.(1)

Most Physiological Gait
The physiological gait pattern is ensured by the individually adjustable exoskeleton combined with the patented dynamic body weight support system.
The Lokomat provides natural weight bearing, afferent sensory feedback and physiological vertical displacement during the complete gait cycle. The hip and knee joint angles can also be individually adjusted during training to tailor to specific needs of patients.
Motivating patient challenge
During rehabilitation, patients need to be challenged in their present individual capabilties and beyond. Speed, body weight support, and robotic support can be adjusted to shape the intensity of the therapy and adapt to the patients’ individual needs.
Patients are motivated to reach their goals with various virtual reality based game-like exercises; also known as Augmented Performance Feedback (APF). Their level of activity influences the performance of the task and the gait pattern and the speed. Multiple guidelines suggest the combination of robot-assisted gait training with virtual reality to further improve lower limb motor outcomes.

Increased Efficiency
The Lokomat relieves the therapist from manually supporting the patient while walking and therefore allows therapists to focus on the patient and the therapy itself.
State-of-the-Art Gait Rehabilitation
Patients are well educated and informed about the most effective and efficient therapy options, and use this information to decide where to go for their rehabilitation.
A great reason to add the Lokomat to your therapy offering is that it has demonstrated to improve clinical outcomes related to walking abilities and functional mobility.

Effectiveness of Lokomat
Training Proven
More than 550 studies have been published on Lokomat therapy in peer-reviewed journals.
Gait training with the Lokomat leads to clinically relevant improvements in adult and pediatric patients with severe to moderate impairments in walking abilities and functional mobility in the following domains:
- Improvement in Walking Speed
Patients undergoing Lokomat training demonstrate clinically significant improvements in walking speed, as measured with the 10-meter-walking test.
(Wirz et al. 2005, Borggraefe et al. 2010, Paker et al. 2013, Ucar et al. 2014, Varoqui et al. 2014, Park and Chung 2018)
- Improvement in Walking Endurance
Walking endurance in patients with severe to moderate gait impairments, as measured with the 6-min-walking-test, increases above the minimal clinically important difference with Lokomat training.
(Wirz et al. 2005, Borggraefe et al. 2010, Alcobendas-Maestro et al. 2012, Schoenrath et al. 2015, Straudi et al. 2015, Beretta et al. 2020)
- Improvement in Functional Ambulation
“People who receive electromechanical-assisted gait training in combination with physiotherapy after stroke are more likely to achieve independent walking than people who receive gait training without these devices. We concluded that eight patients need to be treated to prevent one dependency in walking.”
(Mehrholz et al. 2020)
- Improvement in Functional Mobility
Training with Lokomat leads to improvements above the minimal clinically important difference in functional mobility, as measured with the Time-Up-and-Go.
(Wirz et al. 2005, Ucar et al. 2014, Varoqui et al. 2014, Bae et al. 2017, Park and Chung 2018)
- Improvement in Balance
Robot assisted gait training with Lokomat leads to clinically significant improvements in static and dynamic balance as measured with the Berg Balance Scale in the intended patient population.
(Bang and Shin 2016, Han et al. 2016, Calabrò et al. 2017, Clerici et al. 2017, Park and Chung 2018, Yun et al. 2018, Kim et al. 2019)
- Improvement in Cardiovascular Fitness
Training with the Lokomat improves cardiovascular fitness (as measured with the peak oxygen consumption) in patients who are not yet independent ambulators.
(Chang et al. 2012, Stoller et al. 2015, Gorman et al. 2016, Han et al. 2016, Bae et al. 2017)

What Experts Say
Improve Efficiency & Outcomes
Fewer Resources Needed
Increased efficiency
Increased Therapy Intensity
“The Lokomat allows us to provide our patients with more intensive gait therapy. They experience more repetitions and are motivated by the Augmented Performance Feedback to actively contribute with a maximum effort to their therapy. We are reminded daily how this intensity translates into an increase in functional mobility.”
