Intended Use

The Lokomat is a robotic device intended to enable intensive rehabilitative gait therapy in adult and pediatric patients with severe to moderate impairments in walking abilities and functional mobility. The Lokomat actively guides the patient’s leg movements while walking on a treadmill through an electrically powered, computer-controlled lower-limb exoskeleton. An integrated dynamic body weight support system allows constant unloading of the patient’s body weight throughout the gait cycle and enables upright posture for gait training in a safe environment. The Lokomat also provides real-time biofeedback and game-like exercises to motivate and challenge patients during gait training. The Lokomat allows the therapist to adapt the therapy parameters on a user interface to individualize therapy and address patient-specific needs. The Lokomat can also be used to objectively assess joint stiffness, range of motion and isometric force, and to produce therapy reports.

The Lokomat is always to be used under supervision of a physiotherapist or other medical professional with a paramedic background, who has received specific training in operating the Lokomat and has read and understood the user manual of the Lokomat.

Foreseen settings of application are rehabilitation hospitals, hospitals with rehabilitation departments, outpatient rehabilitation clinics and physiotherapy practices.

Indications

The Lokomat is intended for the rehabilitative treatment of patients with severe to moderate impairments in walking abilities and functional mobility. These impairments in body functions and activities can be caused by different diseases.

For contraindications and risk factors, please see legal notes.
