When patient Jürg Kaderli cut the ribbon of the 1,000th Lokomat in the Swiss Paraplegic Centre, Nottwil it marked a meaningful moment in the world of rehabilitation. It has been 20 years since the founding the company Hocoma AG with their first robotic rehabilitation device the Lokomat, and the Swiss Paraplegic Centre was one of the first places to have one of the devices all those years ago.

The Lokomat is a high-tech robotic gait training device that was developed at the Balgrist University Hospital in Zurich in partnership with Hocoma AG. Dr. Gery Colombo, co-founder of Hocoma AG, was proud to be on hand to personally unveil the 1,000th Lokomat in Nottwil:
“We’re thrilled that our training solutions will help contribute to the outstanding work performed every day at the Swiss Paraplegic Centre,” he said. “In order for advances to be made in rehabilitation technology, it is vital that companies work closely with innovative rehabilitation clinics.”
Diana Sigrist-Nix, Head of Rehabilitation at the Swiss Paraplegic Centre, also favors such partnerships, and is excited about the device for those patients who can benefit from new training methods:
“Thanks to the Lokomat, our therapists can work with patients more intensively and thus achieve the best possible results. Together, we are able to offer renewed hope and a better quality of life to those who have suffered a major setback – and that makes our work worthwhile.”
Today, with more than 7 billion steps taken worldwide and more than 440 studies proving its effectiveness, the Lokomat has changed millions of lives.
After cutting the ribbon of the 1000th Lokomat, Jürg Kaderli trained on the Lokomat for 40 minutes. Following the training session while enjoying the festivities of the 1000th Lokomat event, he summarized his experience:
”I always enjoy training on the Lokomat […] I think it’s a hit.”
