22 years ago, Hocoma was born with the popular Lokomat®, the world’s leading robotic medical device that provides highly repetitive and the most physiological gait training. Lower extremities were in focus and the success and enthusiasm for robotics for rehabilitation blended with a huge motivation to improve patients’ lives guided Hocoma to a new business area – the rehabilitation of the upper extremities.

The journey began with Prof. David Reinkensmeyer from the University of California at Irvine (UCI). Prof. David collaborated intensively with Hocoma to develop a state-of-the-art device that would work on three main goals:

  • Functional movements guided by an ergonomic exoskeleton,
  • Simultaneous arm and hand therapy in an extensive 3D workspace
  • Self-initiated, active and repetitive movement therapy.

Today ArmeoSpring also has a pediatric version, is installed in over 1000 clinics and in more than 80 countries. But the story was not over there and to provide a continuum of care to clinics and solutions to different patient stages, the ArmeoTherapyConcept was created. ArmeoPower was launched in 2011, and the ArmeoSenso in 2018. Today, many clinics worldwide can benefit from a therapy concept that offers efficiency, clinical evidence while attracting the desired patient mix. 15 years after we want to share the inspirational story behind the creation of the Armeo and we couldn’t do it better than by giving the stage to Prof. David Reinkensmeyer.
