Limitations of Conventional Arm and Hand Therapy

    • Severity prevents practice
    • Difficult to keep patients motivated
    • Limited number of repetitions
    • Therapy limited by availability of therapists
    • Unclear feedback regarding progress and performance
    • Changing needs of patients

    Advantages of ArmeoSpring Therapy

    Self-Initiated Movement Therapy

By providing arm weight support, the ArmeoSpring enables patients to use any remaining motor functions and encourages them to achieve a higher number of reach and grasp movements based on specific therapy goals.

As all activity during the training is based on the patient’s own movements, this repetitive training leads to better, faster results and improved long-term outcomes.

Simultaneous Arm and Hand Therapy in a 3D Workspace

The ArmeoSpring allows simultaneous arm and hand training in an extensive 3D workspace with six degrees of freedom.

This enables patients to practice the movements important for their therapy progress and daily life. The ArmeoSpring supports 1D (joint-specific), 2D and 3D movements.

    Ergonomic Exoskeleton

The ergonomic and adjustable exoskeleton of the ArmeoSpring embraces the whole arm, from shoulder to hand, and counterbalances the weight of the patient’s arm.

Built-in sensors record the active movements and all joint angles during the therapy session.

    Motivating Exercises

An extensive library of motivating game-like Augmented Performance Feedback exercises has been designed to train core movement patterns that are commonly used in activities of daily living.

Immediate performance feedback motivates patients and helps to improve their motor abilities, leading to more independence in daily routine and therefore better quality of life.

    Increased Therapy Efficiency

The ArmeoSpring enables therapists to deliver higher training efficiency (more hours per day) thanks to self-directed therapy, which may lead to better long-term outcomes.

This is possible by reducing the need for continuous therapeutic guidance, thus giving therapists the possibility to supervise more than one patient at a time. Furthermore, self-directed therapy enables patients to reach an even higher therapy intensity through extra training during after-hours and weekends.

    Objective Assessments

The ArmeoSpring precisely records how patients perform during their therapy sessions.

Standardized Assessment Tools evaluate the sensor data of the device to investigate specific patient function, including movement ranges. The results can be used to analyze and document the patient’s state and therapy progress in order to further optimize therapy. Results can then be shared with the patient and other clinicians.

Part of a Modular Therapy Concept

The ArmeoSpring is part of the unique and modular Armeo Therapy Concept, the world’s first upper extremity concept that covers the whole “Continuum of Rehabilitation” with one software platform throughout a range of devices, each developed for a specific stage of rehabilitation–from early rehabilitation to long-term recovery.

    Success Stories

I Finaly Feel Like I Can Trust My Body Again
    Armeo Training is Great Fun
In 1993 Hans-Jürgen Bischofs was on his way to work crossing a street when he had a stroke. At the hospital, doctors found out that Mr. Bischofs had suffered from an apoplexia, which had damaged part of the left side of his brain. While he has always been able to walk, Mr. Bischofs’ arm refused to follow his orders. “I had really big problems with my arm. It was so spastic and I was in a lot of pain due to the shoulder subluxation.” He went to occupational and physical therapy to improve function in his right arm, but without any remarkable progress. Almost 20 years after the stroke, he started working with the ArmeoSpring. Only then did his progress pick up speed. “I like the feedback that I get from the ArmeoSpring a lot. Although the training is challenging, it’s also great fun and after only a few training sessions I can actively use my arm again.”
    Hans-Jürgen Bischofs
    Patient
    Self-Initiating the Movement
Tina's life took a sharp turn when suddenly an angioma started bleeding that resulted in hemiparesis of the left side of her body. "The bleeding came totally unexpected and I had to go into surgery immediately. I was left with a paralysis and no job. In the beginning, my arm was extremely spastic and in everyday life I only used the healthy arm." Tina exercises her left arm with the ArmeoSpring twice a week. She is really happy with her achievements. "It’s an absolutely positive experience for the ego, to self-initiate the movement! I’m young, I want to do things myself and now I can," she beams. "The therapy with the Armeo is very exhausting, but it feels good. What helps me most is the feedback on the display." She is already able to use her left arm again in her daily life. And she continues to work hard, so that maybe, one day she could go back to her old job: educating deaf children, using both her hands.
    Tina Kramer

The ArmeoSpring is the preferred therapy choice for arm and hand rehabilitation of the widest range of patients.

    What Experts Say

    Motivation is the Key
"Recovery after brain injury is still not fully understood, but we know one thing for sure: training intensity is the biggest driver of neuroplasticity and motivation is an absolutely crucial element of successful rehabilitation. Armeo supports this in the best possible way. Thanks to Armeo training, our patients are motivated to achieve a higher number of repetitions. In the long run, they will achieve a faster recovery and improved outcomes."
    Prof. Dr. Volker Hömberg
Neurology Director, SRH Gesundheitszentrum Bad Wimpfen, Germany
    An Ideal Tool
"The capacity of Armeo to deliver training with high intensity and [its] quantifiability makes it an ideal tool to implement novel rehabilitation paradigms that we expect to revolutionize recovery from neurological injury."
    Prof. Dr. John Krakauer
Medical Director, Professor of Neurology, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, USA
