Our journey with the C-Mill – Memorial Hospital, Florida

Here is an excerpt from the interview with Becky Boyle, Director of Rehabilitation and Anna Maria Castaneda, PT, DPT, Clinical Educator at Memorial hospital.

Why do your therapists choose to use the C-Mill with the patients?

We wanted to reduce the risk of falling. With the C-Mill, its harness allows us to do intense activities and quickly show the patients that they are not going to fall. Not only are our therapists safe and can reach beyond the boundaries of what they would normally do, but they can allow the patient to jump in and let them do the activity. The patient will quickly start to accommodate even when they are hesitant to get on a new piece of equipment. They find that they can do every activity that they are asked.

Because of this, the therapist can cover a lot more ground in that first 60–90-minute session and work toward the patient’s goals for improvement. We find that the patients are ready and eager to do it again the next day. Most of the time the patients remind the therapist that they want to come back and use the C-Mill equipment. When patients are excited to come back to therapy and focus on something that they themselves see improvement on, that to me is everything.

How do you use the features in the C-Mill to motivate the patients?

The C-Mill has several emergency stops, safety harness, and force plate in it to obtain information for assessments. The external cues that it provides the patients such as the treadmill projections with obstacles and targets as well as the interactive monitor that is linked to the force plate to show the patient visual and auditory cues to shift their weight, how to move forward. You can use it with a low-level patient where you are just working on weight shifting very simply just trying to find the midline. All the way to very complex high intensity gait training. You can increase and decrease the speed in an instant as well as control cueing which makes it very versatile.
